This is what happens to a steel shaft when you don't clamp a bearing to it properly! It only had around 20 hours on it and obviously the clearance between the inner shell and the shaft was enough to cause the bearing to move around a very small amount initially - it then made the clearance a bit bigger! The bearing was in perfect condition - it's much harder than the cold rolled steel shaft.

It does look exactly like the "spark erosion" on my shaft though.



Maybe it just takes a little spark erosion to get the movement started. What do you think Tony?

Yup fretting - all you need to do is have an interference fit on the shaft.
