is inch shaft ok for a short lift fan shaft, or is it to heavy?

got a bit of inch stainless round, was going to have a couple of flange bearings either side of a box section frame sandwhiched between plates, and bushes to stop the box crushing.

could i get away with 20mm shaft? whats normally used. the fan is going to be belt driven, and will use about 12hp.

any thoughts welcome!

many thanks

Jon if you think about it Briggs etc use 1" on 10 / 12 bhp engines as there is a fair bit of kinetic energy when you stop the fan and on a short shaft the amount of weight you are going to save is not worth the risk I've used 1" all over on the cansev and so has John on his sevtecs.

25mm mild steel will safely transmit 105 Nm torque so 25mm SS is plenty - there's not a great deal of length i presume so bending is not an issue either

good luck
