I do hope someone can answer this 'cos Maplins were useless!

I've got a Skydrive digital Tacho/hourmeter, but the wiring isn't long enough, and worse I've somehow lost the stiff bit of wiring at the end that was wound around the HT leads.

It looks like a type of coaxial wire??

What sort of wiring do I need?

Where can I get it from?

Do I solder both bits of existing wire to the extension wire, or do I only solder the core wires together?

If it's anything like the tinytach, you need to connect tthe cores, insulate, then connect the screen. Any bit of single solid wire will do for the pick up, just solder on to the core and earth to the screen. I have used a bit of ordinary electrical wire out of some twin and earth for the pickup in the past

it is RG174 50ohm coxial cable, as ewan says you need to join the central conductor, (with a hook and solder joint, and then heat shrink) tease out the screen and solder this also, heat shrink the lot.

earth the screen to the engine and most certainly a bit of solid copper wire from the back of the cooker will do around the HT, sleave it tho!

You Bet it Helps!

By Hook & solder, do you mean winding the two ends together before soldering?

Just to avoid the idiot mistake...

Is the Screen the outer wire cable or the CORE cable?? http://hovercraft.org.uk/images/icons/smiley_icons/icon_redface.gif

in order to stop the solder joint breaking under vibration, you bend a little hook in each end and solder that, rather than laying them against each other, and or twisting them when flat!

the screen is the woven braded outer on the coax! its important this does not touch the inner core!
