View Full Version : HoverRally09 USA Live this weekend

Keith Oakley
17-Jun-09, 10:31 PM
Greetings from a hot and sunny Riverside Iowa where the course is being prepared for this years HoverRally the premier US hovering event of the year. Initial broadband internet tests look encouraging that we will be able to cover live the main practise and race events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Iowa is 6 hours behind UK time so this weekend you'll be able to feast on UK F1 by day and US hovering in the evening. Better get some tinnies in!!

8 hours 4 me. :p, Did you see I found some 3G on the farm, BUT if you move the thingie just a bit left or right or up or down. OR if the dog lies on the couch, poooof we loose the signal, So should be watching I hope. Had better kik the dog out, that's her fav spot.

Yea I know what you mean. We're getting broadband to race control using my hotel room broadband by hanging an aerial out of my 4th floor window and lobbing it 600metres by wifi to race control.

Its overcast today, lots of thunderstorms passing through and a chance of a twister! The hotel room loos are officially nominated as tornado shelters! The race site is on the floodplain - think Somme then times 2. Craft are arriving - the shortest journey I've heard is 5 hours of driving, the longest 30hours.

I'm off to assemble noisecam in my hotel room, listening to Radio2. Simon & Bob Coles are off buying wellies/waders.

Keep us posted on starting times, K..

At least in the loo when the twister hits you don't have to wary about sh*ting yourself...

Its overcast and we're on thunderstorm alert today. Many more craft arrived, I guess around 30 so far. Plenty of wooden props and 2 New Zealand Air Slider craft with solid skirts.
Todays race practise this afternoon and in parallel a cruising section launching on the nearby English River. The rivers maybe 20yards wide and in full flood. 2 miles down that river and you're into the much larger Iowa River (Thames at Windsor width?) then 50 miles down that you're into the Mississipi (Rhine in Holland) - about 1200 miles down that is the Gulf of Mexico. Theres plenty of cruising ground!!
Hope to cover the practise live from around 3pm (9pm this evening UK)

Keith Oakley
19-Jun-09, 08:05 PM
Yup Terry Chapman will be doing it fri and sat. Its a bit quiet at the moment - the cruisers are off 30 miles or so downriver and theres just the odd craft operating here but I'll put the camera on now.

It's a bright sunny saturday morning after the Hoverclub of America AGM last night. Good job we packed up when we did just as we got back to the hotel it was chucking it down and traffic cones were flying about the car park at head height.

I have just had a phone call from Terry Chapman with an update.

Torrential rain overnight has turned the site into a mudbath they are now starting to get themselves sorted and the webcast should be back online in about half an hour, 6.30pm UK time.
The first event is a slalom course, one at a time, there will then be a short break before they go into the Allcomers endurance race, not sure if that will be 30 laps or 2 hours duration.

Back to the BBQ!!!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The main internet link to race control failed on fri night after the thunderstorm so the videos you got were squeezed into a very slow mobile phone backup, and it was difficult for me to monitor what you were getting.

I think the final total was 34 craft, 22 racers 12 cruisers. We managed to noise test several craft ranging from 78dba to 105dba. Lots of different designs so a very useful exercise. Site is very interesting, essientially an old sandpit across the road from a new casino/hotel complex. Site owners actually approached Hoverclub of America after seeing hovercraft racing (we think Claydon) on YouTube. Lots of potential for future if the ground is properly drained and grassed. With the possibility of financial support from the Casino its already being talked of as a future Worlds site.

Just finished a very interesting apres event evening. A small bunch of us arrived at a downtown Riverside restaurant to find normal TV coverage replaced by storm warning news and a radar picture of a large thunderstorm complex coming straight at us. The 'air raid' sirens went off twice and were ignored. But with the TV saying 'Tornado Alert -take shelter' on the third siren scream we took our meals calmly into the basement, where we stayed for 2 hours watching the tv coverage of the storm above our heads - except TV went off twice, leaving an eerie silence. 2 colleagues from the hotel came in to say the casino had evacuated to their storm shelters, that the road was about invisible under the rain, and that they had seen a couple of twisters. The tv showed live pics of a hog farm where the hogs had been de-roofed by a twister. The lightning was continuous rather than the usual isolated flashes. When the TV went back to normal we had another beer and came back to the hotel. I guess tomorrow we will see if the odd remaining tent is still there!!

Back tuesday

Hi all,
Just wanted to give a shout out to Keith, Simon and Bob. It was great to meet you guys and hang out with you for a while when I wasn't racing. I hope you made it home safely and enjoyed yourselves and didn't mind the rain and tornados too much. I watched the replay video when I got home (from the files you copied to me). I think we looked more like the "Wacky racers" compared to the UK races :). Looking forward to seeing the noise analysis on my Revtech Keith. Keep in touch.

Keith Oakley
27-Jun-09, 09:15 AM
Hi Dave
Simon Bob and I much enjoyed the 'Wacky Races' and especially the warm reception we received over in the USA, from the people as well as the weather!
I've looked at the traffic stats for last weekend. We averaged around 30-35 viewers, similar to UK events, but this time 50.6% of all sessions came from N America and 40.9% from Europe. The breakdown was:
GB 36.1%
Virginia 11.4%
Texas 8.7%
California 5.7%
Iowa 5.2%
New Jersey 3.8%
New York 2.7%
Ohio 2.2%
Alabama 1.9%
Washington 1.9%
N Carolina 1.1%
Pennsylvania 0.7%
Michigan 0.5%
Colorado 0.5%
Georgia 0.5%
Other USA 3.6%
Slovenia 2.0%
France 1.7%
Canada0.8%
Germany 0.7%
Ireland 0.6%
Netherlands 0.5%
Sweden 0.4%
Czech Republic 0.2%
Italy 0.2%
Australia 0.4%
China 0.2%
Pakistan 0.1%
Singapore 0.1%

The HoverRally09 and Rother videos will be on the replay service in a day or so.

Keith
