I'm a newbie starting to build a Challenger.

Can anyone tell me the weight saving difference between cutting the gearbox off and just taking the gears out?

cutting the gearbox off saves next to nothing in weight but it does give you a neat engine and you will probably save more weight in the frame you have to make if it's cut off

it's a personal choice at the end of the day

if you've not yet got an engine yet consider the TZR250 which has taken over the LC as the yamaha engine of choice for F3 - lots more power for the same cc and simple to hoverise and plenty people still running them to give you help and advice

Any particular reason why you want to build a 1980s style craft?

If no-one has told you already, that craft is neither good for racing or cruising so you'll be stuck with operating in a private field.
The RD250LC was OK in it's day but is so outdated that it's a museum piece.

You'd be far better off getting a decent cruising hull such as an Osprey or Flying Fish and fitting it out with a Briggs and Stratton or a Kohler. This may cost you a little more but at least you'd end up with something you can actually use.

If you were building a kit car you wouldn't build a Model T Ford eh?
