Hi

Ive got a moto craft with a 503 engine which has been garaged but not run for about 2 years. Are there any recommended checks to do on the engine before trying to start it up?

THanks!
Nic

Do you have the operators manuals for this engine? If not, please pm me with your email and I'll send them.

Hi,

Drain all fuel from carbs, replace fuel line and filter, flush the tank.

Squirt oil into the barrels before turning over, make sure you get a nice coating round the pistons and in the bearings. Might make it a bit harder to start but might save excessive wear.

Clean filters. Check for no obvious dirt and crap in places it shouldn't be. Have a peek at the pistons through inlet and outlet ports to check they look ok.

Check plugs and clean/renew if necessary. Check head bolts are correct torque.

Check ALL mounting bolts are done up tight. This includes engine to frame and frame to craft. Check also that any rubber mounts haven't perished, don't want the engine coming loose!

Also give the fan a once over, should be fine but don't really want to run it if they have major cracks in.

Then pull the string, get it warmed up before you rev it. If it is a nightmare to start the crank oil seals may have perished a bit which can happen if the engine is left for that long without being turned over.

Good luck

Normally when you don't hear anything it means they are still trying to catch all the bits that are falling from the sky! http://www.jonrb.com/emoticons/hehe.gif

Ha ha! Its still on one piece just!!

I gave it a good look over as suggested, had some trouble with it at first, had to replace air filters, plugs and adjust the throttle cables, but seems to be going fine now had it out for the last 2 days great fun! thanks for the help!

BTW, i was running castrol R2 oil, i think it has now been discontinued, what oil do people tend to use in the 503 these days?

Thanks!
Nic
