Default How to make the key fit?

Can I use mild steel for the key which holds the taperlock for my pulleys to the fan shaft or does it need to be something harder?

    Thanks.

    Dunc

    EDITED TO SAY:

found the key steel which Ken had sent me with the fan shafts and pulleys.

What is the correct proceadure for getting them together?

I Tried sitting the key in the shaft and then attempted to slide the taperlock over the top but it doesnt want to go...its almost like the key sticks out of the shaft and taperlock a tiny bit to much

    Any ideas?

Not mild steel - you need keysteel - it's specifically made for keyways and is good at resisting shear

www.ondrives.com - you can get it by the length or just buy individual keys variaous lengths and sizes - the y do mail order as well

    don't use mild steel

    hope that helps

There must be something in the key way, they are cut standard or they should be at least, here in SA that is, check for any dirt or rubish inside both shaft and taper lock. If the distance is say less than a mil then try a hear drier on the taper to get it to expand a bit.

What ever you do, try stay away from a hammer, not good..

why dont you try giving it a perm aswell!

does the key fit in the bush?

is it a one part bush? which you can spread a little? slide over shaft and key and tighten into the hub via the grub screw things?

if you do require a gental tap to fit use an ally block against the part.

Hi Duncan sounds like a case of the keyway in the shaft has not been cut deep enough you should not have to spread open the taperlock bush it should all be a nice slide fit out of the box and if you do spread it open it could break or when you tighten the pulley on it will run out of true if the key is a high spot if its only .5mm too high file it if more get the keyway in the shaft re cut and make sure you have no burs anywhere.

    You are quite right.

I measured the keyway and it is only 3.41mm deep....I will stick it in a milling machine and try and removed another 0.59mm from the keyway...something tells me its not going to be easy

or tickle the top of the key with an angle grinder.
