    Default Hovercraft Model Help

    Afternoon all,

I have through a crazy set of events corned

myself in a piece of design coursework at uni.

Basically the PDS was for a “truck” to carry

a 2kg steel block 3m repeatedly (the forward

motion is powered by a 46.7N spring).

Most people would have stuck with a chassis

with wheels, but me being me thought

differently. The catch is I cat find a lift

    fan to inflate the skirt.

The several suggestions that have been put

    forward are:

    24cc petrol Leaf blower

    Heavy duty computer cooling fan

12v 12” car fan powered by 12v Race battery

I was hoping that I could gather more suggestions, advice here.

    David,

The power required to lift will depend on the following:

    All up weight

    Area of platform

Air gap round the edges, which depends on the type of floor and the type of skirt.

Look in the downloads section of this site; you will find documents that explain how to calculate the power. Then you can explore combinations of the above to see which if any of your sources have sufficient power.

One you have a solution with enough power, ideally you should optimise the match between the fan curve (pressure v flow) to the load curve (pressure v flow). You can do this by varying the fan parameters (eg blade pitch, rpm, diameter)) or, to a certain extent, the area of the platform.

In practise, you may not have all the info you need on the fans, or be able to alter them in the way you want, so its often easier to work by experiment.

    HTH
