    Default Engine Components

    I have read several posts about modifications to allow Briggs and Stratton engine rev faster and thus put out more power. What information is availble? Who can supply the after market parts. Cheers, Mark (Australia)

    There's more to it than just letting it rev more. The tune that Keith at Vortex Services does involves a re-profiled cam and changing the timing. This takes the 20bhp vanguard to 32bhp at approx 4200.

    Not to put a downer on things, and talking from recent a close experience, I was told that if I tuned my 22 v twin briggs, it's days were numbered... They were right! I was told that the exhaust valves would over heat and the heads would fall off. True to form... Go to the bottom of this page and click on page 4 of these messages and keep going till you find "It went BANG!" There is a picture on there of the shed loads of damage.

    I spoke to a valve manufacturer and they had done tests on the briggs valves and they told me that they are little more than a bit of mild steel rod with a blob of metal welded on, poorly, on to one end! My engine was at Idle when it dropped its valve. Normally a dropped valve writes the engine off.



    So when you do put your hot cam in, the high lift roller rockers available from Briggs racing USA, the gas flowed inlet manifold with huge carb and the stepped woodruff key that advances the timing (essential), then yes you get much better performance and revs, easy 30+ Hp, but for goodness sake… make sure you put better valves in it or it will last until the end of the first straight.



    Keith at Vortex here in the UK sourced vastly better valves at a reasonable price. Around the rest of the world, any half decent valve manufacturer will knock out a copied set of the originals. They may be a bit pricey but not compared to throwing the engine you have just tuned away after about half an hour.

    the 31 and 35 hp standard engines have not had any problems and are still runing at standard 3600 rpm seems the way to go if you do not want to break down
