    Default 503 points ignition

    Hi all,

I just started up the 503, and it seems the kill switch doesn't work! The engine came with a home brew wiring harness which I suspect is faulty.

Can anyone send me a copy of the points ignition schematic please? The rotax manual only has the digital version...

As people have mentioned, this setup does seem to have issues with going through about 1300rpm - a quick yank of the starter fixes it .

    Cheers!

    Toby

Has it got the right kill switch?

i thought i,d be a smart *rse and convert a non rotax type kill switch to a kill type.

big big mistake, it cost me dear when it failed on the start line.

first off, get a simple continuity tester, and check it is the switch,

    there only about a tenner

if its anything like my 447 the two black wires from the coils, are joined not taken to earth, to stop!

take the plugs out and turn it over to asertain if the kill switch is working! assuming you stopped it via fuel starvation previously, this is not a good thing for the engine

running thru 1300rmp will be rough as it should tick over just above 2000 top out 6500 ish.

It's a proper kill switch (K&M) - it doesn't matter if it's on or off the engine still runs!

I stopped it by yanking the spark plug caps off when it was going very slowly (I think I need to boost the idle speed, or let it warm up more...?)

I have a basic continuoty tester / voltmeter so will be using that today

I've sorted it out now...turned out the wiring harness had a connection hidden right in the depths of it that had broken so it couldn't short.

I removed much of the old wiring from my broken 447 to replace all the funny colours the previous owner used.

I have also relocated the coils to on the front of the engine - they used to be underneath the carbs and totally inaccessable.

edit - jeese I really need a new camera!

More likely that you need to adjust the white balance for use under Fluorescent light )
