    Default masking off gelcoat

is there a good alternative to regular masking tape when masking off polyester gelcoat

if i use masking tape the gelcoat seems to soften the edges and leaves some of the tapes' glue behind on the mould when it's peeled off

i need something that doesn't react to the gelcoat

    it's very annoying !

    thanks in advance

PVC insulation tape. It does still react, but it is the best stuff I found.

You can also curve it to make a nice radius. Make sure you peel the tape off towards the colour whilst the gelcoat is still wet (otherwise you will end up pulling the gelcoat off).

If you are really fussy let the first gelcoat cure and then lighty polish the mould next to the line (it will remove all evidence of the tape line). If you are not too fussy you can apply the second (spray) gelcoat straight away, but be careful to let it settle on and don't "push it" otherwise you can mix the colours.

Tony, If you are talking about masking off directly on to a mould , we only ever used masking tape. Even on the several Union Jack craft we produced with all the masking they entailed.(2 days of masking and gelling 3 colours)

I suggest that you look at the quality of your masking tape.

Go for the best and you should have no problems. I definitely would not use pvc.

    Likewise ,

when we used to make canoes, we always got some lift on the edges, even using good masking tape,.

we used to hide most of our join edges with an exterior gel stripe.
