Wink Sealand hovercraft from millom 1970s slide show video

Have you checked the sealand hovercraft video slide shows on youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXC53kFvFjc
    AND www.youtube.com/user/Markiemadman?feature=mhum
    There are 5 slide shows.
One shows you the craft being tested in military colours for the Spanish navy.
Another one shows you testing in the snow.
If you dont know who sealand hovercraft are, they built one of the finest and most powerful crafts in the 1970s.
The slide shows on youtube have only just been put on there and show alot of good pics
    never seen before.
Hope you like the slide shows as good as me

In their day they were only reasonable performers.
Very difficult to get over the hump and very poor controllability.

The weak link was the centrifugal lift fan gearbox which was prone to overheating

I spent quite a bit of time working on one in Devon to improve the handling by putting a butterfly valve and a side opening port linked together in each thrust duct. They were hydraulically controlled.

It made a considerable difference but I spent many an hour ouside the cabin lending my insignificant weight to the nose getting soaked.

    Oh happy days.
There is one in the Museum.

Cool Re: Sealand hovercraft from millom 1970s slide show video

The only reason in our experience for the gear box to overheat would be an out of balance fan or water in the gear box.
Your craft may have been modified as the craft was very movable rotating with a turning rate of about 4 seconds for 360 degrees .
It does sound as if your ballast system is not working.
If the craft was lightly laden ,the water ballast should be fully forward.
My dad was chief engineer for sealand.

The one I worked on needed 4 men on the front quarter and another 4 on the opposite rear to get it to turn around on the hard standing.
I also had a rather worrying moment when on wet mud it travelled over a quarter of a mile and would not stop. That was interesting with a bridge in sight.
The craft did eventually go on to be filmed by the BBC who put it to music as it pirouetted on the water after it was modified.
If any one can find that film I would be grateful. I guess it was in the early eighties.
