    THE CHINESE MITTEN CRAB
When out cruising look something to look out for.
We have been asked by our friends at Natural England to seek your support in looking out for this new threat to our native crabs. The Chinese Mitten crab is a cause for concern... highly invasive and damaging to ecology and the economy. The have been spotted in the North West in the Duddon Estuary and in Millom Pier.
They are easy to spot as they are large - the size of a plate and have large furry front claws.
The Chinese mitten crab is one of the worlds worst invasive species and scientists need help recording sightings in the UK .In the UK they cause immense economic and ecological damage, to unprotected river banks, blocking water systems, damaging fishing gear and competing with native species for food and habitat. They are in the Global Invasive Species Database list of the world's worst 100 invasive alien species. Look for detailed photos at http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/l...abs/index.html
Beach clean volunteers, anglers, waterway workers, boating enthusiasts hovercrafters and nature lovers may be the most likely to come across these crustaceans, but anyone can record a sighting online or by telephone, email or text. If out cruising and you see any please report sightings by text or picture message to 07806 938789
    or online at www.mittencrabs.org.uk

Also be aware that bananas in pyjamas can be troublesome, especially in gangs of two!
